Letters to his family [manuscript] 1862-1865.

Smith writes to his parents and sisters in Mathews Co. about camp life, family events, religious sentiments and the federal occupation of Mathews Co. Of interest are letters regarding the Union shelling of Charleston, S.C. and the Petersburg mine explosion and battle of the Crater. There is also a pass granted Smith to search for provisions and an 1862 receipt made out to a free Negro of Gloucester Co.
